What’s new: GPS interreference in the Middle East was bad, now its worse.

Why its important:

  • Approx 53,000 ships transit the Persian Gulf each year carrying oil out and critical supplies in.
  • Approx 26,000 ships transited the Suez Canal in 2023 making a much quicker, less costly, lower environmental impact journey than going around Africa.
    • In 2024 Suez Canal transits were cut in half to 13,000 because of security concerns
  • 95% of international trade goes by maritime. Major disruptions at chokepoints like these impact the entier global economy.

What else to know: The U.K. Maritime Transportation Office UKMTO has been a trusted source of information for over 20 years. It supports maritime information, trade and security in the Middle East, Indian Ocean, and Gulf of Guinea. Find out more about this outstanding organization here.
