What’s new: The Department of Transportation (DOT) is looking to hire a person to lead its PNT and Spectrum Management staff. The position was formerly held by Karen Van Dyke.

Why it’s important: DOT is the lead for all civil GPS and PNT issues in the federal government. Since most GPS uses and users are civilian, this is arguably the most important PNT-related job in government.

What else to know:

  • Federal officials, especially the Deputy Secretary at DOT and the Federal Communications Commission Chair, have recently spoken about the need for one or more alternatives to GPS. Yet so far, civil federal agencies have not made any visible moves to access alternative systems to support IT and other applications.
  • The Department of Defense may (or may not) be meeting its own needs. It does not show any evidence of wanting to share that capability with other users in government.
  • The position closes on the 18th of August.
